Frame the Future: Engaging the Next Generation in the Building Industry

Frame the Future: Engaging the Next Generation in the Building Industry

The building industry has long been a cornerstone of communities, providing essential infrastructure and opportunities for skilled workers. Yet, in recent decades, the industry has faced challenges, particularly in attracting younger generations. That’s where the “Frame the Future” event steps in, offering high school students a hands-on experience that introduces them to the possibilities within the building trades.

The Purpose of Frame the Future

“Frame the Future,” organized by the Home Builders’ Association (HBA) of the Sioux Empire, is designed to get high school students actively engaged in construction-related activities. The goal is to expose them to the building industry and help them see it as a viable and rewarding career path after high school. With multiple stations set up, the students work in groups and rotate through different tasks, allowing them to experience various aspects of the construction process.

A Competitive and Educational Event

One of the largest and most popular stations at “Frame the Future” is the wall framing competition. Students are provided with the materials and a blueprint for a wall section, and their task is to frame it both accurately and quickly. The competition element adds excitement as the students are graded on their precision in reading and following the plans, as well as how quickly they complete the project.

Eric Yost, owner of Home Solutions, has been deeply involved with the wall framing station since the event’s inception. “We draw the plans, create the material list, and provide the instruction and grading,” Eric explains. “It’s an amazing way to teach these students about framing while also giving them a sense of accomplishment and pride in what they build.”

The competition has become a highlight of the event. At a recent session, a group of students thought the provided lumber was the wrong size, only to discover that their doorway framing was incorrect. This hands-on learning opportunity taught them a valuable lesson about reading plans accurately and reinforced the importance of precision in construction.

Growing Success Year After Year

Though relatively new, “Frame the Future” is gaining momentum. The event debuted in 2023 and grew significantly by 2024. As plans develop for 2025, the event is expected to expand further, reaching even more students, and continuing to evolve its curriculum and activities.

“We can’t say for sure what the long-term impact will be,” Eric says, “but our hope is that we can positively influence these kids’ career decisions and guide them toward the building industry. There’s so much potential here for those who are willing to learn and grow.”

Changing Perceptions of the Building Industry

One of the key reasons events like “Frame the Future” are so important is the shifting perception of the building trades. For decades, there has been a stigma surrounding the industry, often perpetuated by higher education institutions. Many young people have been steered away from trade careers, despite the fact that the building industry offers tremendous opportunities for growth, advancement, and financial reward.

“Part of our mission is to change that negative view,” Eric explains. “The building industry isn’t just a job; it’s a career with room for advancement. It’s rewarding both personally and publicly, and it can be a very profitable path.”

A Bright Future for Building Careers

Events like “Frame the Future” help illustrate the value of the building industry to the next generation. Through hands-on experience, friendly competition, and real-world instruction, students not only learn vital skills but also gain an appreciation for the work that goes into building the spaces we live in. As the event continues to grow, it will undoubtedly inspire more young people to explore careers in the building trades—building a stronger future for the industry and the community alike.
