Repair Affair: Building Accessibility, Changing Lives

In a world where independence and mobility are key to a high quality of life, it’s heartbreaking to see people confined to their homes due to accessibility issues. That’s why Repair Affair exists—to provide accessibility renovations for individuals who desperately need them but cannot afford the high costs. Organized by the Home Builders’ Association (HBA) of the Sioux Empire, Repair Affair is a one-day event with a mission: to help disabled and low-income homeowners regain their independence through necessary home modifications.

The Power of Volunteerism and Community Collaboration

Repair Affair is a true example of community collaboration. The event is not only organized by the HBA, but it also brings together volunteers from a wide range of industries. From contractors to bankers, accountants to store owners, individuals from across the Sioux Empire unite, wearing tool belts and working side-by-side to make a difference. These volunteers may not all work directly in the building trades, but their willingness to help, regardless of profession, highlights the community’s shared values of kindness and service.

The event’s materials are funded by the HBA Care Foundation, while the planning and project management are handled by volunteer contractors. These contractors treat the projects as their own, offering their time and expertise to ensure that the renovations are done professionally and safely.

Home Solutions: A Hands-On Approach

Home Solutions has played an integral role in Repair Affair, with owner Eric Yost personally overseeing three projects. In 2022, Home Solutions rebuilt a front deck for a local homeowner, ensuring safe access in and out of the house. In both 2023 and 2024, Home Solutions built wheelchair ramps, giving disabled homeowners the freedom to leave their homes easily—something most people take for granted.

Eric’s involvement doesn’t stop at managing construction. He personally conducts all on-site measurements, drafts the blueprints, calculates material needs, and even handles permit applications. On the day of the event, Eric and his team are there every step of the way, ensuring the project runs smoothly. “Seeing the joy and relief on these homeowners’ faces when they realize they can easily access their homes again—it’s priceless,” says Eric.

A Lifeline for Those in Need

Since its inception in 1993, Repair Affair has made a profound impact on the Sioux Empire community. With more than 6,600 volunteer hours and over 270 accessibility-related projects completed, the event has touched countless lives. Most of the beneficiaries are elderly or disabled individuals living on tight budgets, people who otherwise might never be able to afford the necessary modifications to make their homes safe and accessible.

The renovations themselves range from simple fixes, like installing grab bars, to more complex projects like widening doorways or building wheelchair ramps. But even the simplest projects can transform someone’s life. For some, the addition of a ramp means being able to leave their home for the first time in years. For others, a new handrail or toilet replacement can provide safety and comfort that was previously out of reach.

Building a More Accessible Future

Events like Repair Affair serve as a reminder that the building industry has a responsibility to think about accessibility in all its projects. Whether it’s a new construction or a remodel, keeping accessibility in mind ensures that homes can easily be adapted to meet the needs of future occupants. “You never know who will call a house a home someday,” Eric says, “and a few thoughtful changes during the planning process can make all the difference.”

By bridging the gap between those in need and those willing to help, Repair Affair continues to improve lives, one home at a time.
